MADRID mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardón has triggered another internal dispute within the PP party after publicly stating his wish to be an MP for the party as well as mayor. PP secretary general Angel Acebes has rejected such a possibility and asked for everyone to ‘concentrate on their own jobs’. This is not the first time Sr Ruiz Gallardón has stated his interest in jumping to national politics or even party leadership. The mayor of Madrid has requested his party ‘embraces moderation’ for the general election campaign next year.

DESPITE initial warnings to all holidaymakers, Spanish tourists in Cancun (Mexico) have been asked to ‘wait and stay calm’ by Mexican authorities over the arrival of Hurricane Dean. There are around 7,000 Spanish holidaymakers in the area. Cancun airport has enforced restrictions of international flight arrivals and staff at the Spanish consulate has said everything is under control – an emergency evacuation plan has been set up.

MIGUEL Sanz was invested president of the Navarra region, when it became the last one to carry out such a ceremony since the local and regional elections last May. The leader of UPN (party of the PP) has offered agreements to the PSOE party as Sr Sanz will be ruling with an insufficient majority. The delay in his appointment is the result of several months of negotiations between other parties including the PSOE, whose head office in Madrid vetoed an agreement reached with nationalists Nafarroa Bai.

A NORTH AFRICAN immigrant was found wandering near the summit of the Mulhacén, the highest mountain in the Iberian Peninsula at 3,482 metres, by a team of mountain climbers at the weekend. The man, originally from Mali, said he had been lost for hours.

THE NUMBER of traffic accidents reported on highways and motorways throughout Spain increased by 180 per cent in August, compared to the same period last year.

A GREY shark has been stopping bathers from swimming off the shores of Miracle beach in Tarragona. After two days of failed attempts, experts captured it and transferred it to Barcelona Aquarium.

SINCE June 1, 23 women have been killed by their partners in Spain, making summer 2007 the worst for domestic violence in the past four years. So far this year 50 women have died in domestic violence incidents.

FIFTY-SIX per cent of products which have been ordered to be removed from shelves in Spanish stores this year were made in Asian countries according to figures released by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. Meanwhile, consumer associations have reported that some of the items recently withdrawn from sale by toy manufacturers Mattel are still on offer in some stores.
