Gandia residents demand action over noisy bars

Under fire: Environment councillor Fernando MutBy Roy Wickman
RESIDENTS living in Plaza del Castell in Gandia are still suffering from noise emanating from clubs and bars in the zone, despite taking their complaints to the council.

Last week residents’ representatives met with the new environment councillor Fernando Mut to formally complain about the excessive noise they have to endure during the summer months from the many bars and clubs in the area.

Sr Mut said that the council’s night patrols visit bars and clubs where noise levels are too high, to inform them they are breaking the law, but residents in Plaza del Castell say they are ineffective and much more needs to be done.

They also say that the night patrols do not visit the Plaza because they are too busy covering the areas of Clot de la Mota, Serrería Turia, Campo de Rugby and Plaza Baladre.

In order to reinforce their complaint, residents have invited the councillor to have supper with them and stay the night so that he can experience the severity of the problem first hand.

Dogs massacre Barx chickens

News Staff Reporter
TWO husky dogs killed nearly 1,500 chickens in just a couple of hours after jumping into a farm in Barx last week.

The dogs, which had escaped from a nearby villa, jumped into the chicken farm through a window but were then unable to get out again.

When a worker returned to the farm he found the slaughter and called the Guardia Civil and La Safor animal protection society.

The dogs carried microchips and were later reclaimed by their owner. A spokesman for the protection society said the dogs were in excellent condition and stressed that huskies are not dangerous.

Luckily there was no internal connection between the ground floor and two upper floors of the farm where there are a further 15,000 chickens.

The farm owner has reported the incident to the Guardia Civil and has announced he will be demanding compensation for the financial loss.

High power connection

Tensions running high: residents had fought against the power lineNews Staff Reporter
ELECTRICITY company Iberdrola has finally inaugurated the new high-tension line that guarantees supply to the south of Valencia Province.

The new line will mean the end of hated power failures – especially in the summer when La Safor district population reaches 700,000 – but it has also been severely criticised.

The overhead line carries power 40 kilometres from Vilanova de Castelló to Gandia and has cost the company an investment of eight million euros.

However, the project – first planned 18 years ago – has a history of controversy and Iberdrola have had to come up with 15 alternative routes and present 11 different projects.

Opposition was strongest in the Valldigna area where for more than 10 years the people of Tavernes, Benifairó and Simat fought the plans claiming health fears for residents and damage to the environment.

Advanced fire fighting

News Staff Reporter
A CARCAIXENT urbanisation will have a high-tech fire-fighting system unique in Europe.

Residents of the urbanisation Santa Marina de la Barraca d’Aigües will turn on the ‘Sideinfo’ system on August 25.

A network of pipes carries water from a special deposit to 15 high-pressure cannons - distributed strategically around the estate – that shoot water up to 60 metres, spreading a ‘carpet’ over the entire urbanisation.

The new installation also includes 20 latest design hydrants for fire engines.

Traffic safety improves

News staff reporter
TRAFFIC police have tripled the number of breath-test checks in Gandia.

Last year, officers carried out 340 tests, with 31 drivers found over the limit.

This year there have been 831 tests just up to July, with only 16 drivers positive.

Gandia citizens’ security councillor Vicent Mascarell said the anti drink-driving campaigns are proving very successful and offences are also down because of the new traffic law and points system driving licence.

The councillor also announced success in checks on motorbike and moped riders wearing helmets. Last year there were 435 checks and 84 reported infractions, this year with 400 checks so far there have only been 43 reports.

Port crossing today

News Staff Reporter
GANDIA’S ‘Travesía al Port’ fun swimming event will take place in the harbour today (Wednesday).

The event has beaten all records with more than 480 swimmers expected, a hundred more than last year.

Participants are aged from eight to 70 years, 250 are men and 130 women.

Swimmers will take the plunge at 11.30 to cover the 800-metre stretch in this 54th consecutive event.

Hailstorms wreak havoc

News Staff Reporter
HAILSTONE storms at the beginning of this week brought disaster for La Safor district crop growers.

Worst hit was Xeresa, where some crops were completely destroyed in the storms, leaving a devastated sight of bare branches and rotten fruit.

Rain was also a problem and the downpours caused electricity cuts of up to two hours in coastal towns including Daimús and Piles. Rainstorms were particularly heavy in Marxuquera.

Restoration works finished

Valencia’s provincial council is finishing restoration and improvement works to several monuments in the south of the province.

In La Font d’En Carròs and Villalonga the council has sponsored work improving the accesses and surroundings to the towns’ hermitages.

Both these chapels had been abandoned and left to ruin but now they will be open for religious services as well as attracting visits from residents and tourists.

In Ròtova work is almost finished on the old ‘riu-rau’ grape drying building that will house a museum about raisin production that was so important to this area at the end of the 19th century.

L’Alqueria expansion plans

L’Alqueria de la Comtessa is rapidly improving its services and infrastructure.

The local council has now awarded a contract worth 13 million euros to build the town’s industrial estate and has opened up land for house building.

The industrial estate will be at the east of the town, bordering with the municipal districts of Palmera, Piles and Oliva, while about 150 detached villas will be built on 17,000 square metres of land at the west of L’Alqueria.

Mayor Salvador Femenía said the town is growing quickly with many young couples with children moving to live there and the population should soon reach 2,000.

Walking and cycling routes published

Oliva council has presented new information and signposts for its walking and cycling routes.

Tourism councillor Pau Pérez unveiled the new route map that signals several paths through areas of rich landscape and high cultural value.

The councillor said the idea is to offer tourists more than sun and beach and to learn more about the town’s beautiful surroundings.

Waiter training courses

Gandia council has organised a course training waiters and barmen as there are not enough professionals for the town’s restaurants.

The course is aimed at people aged between 16 and 25 who are having difficulty finding a job.

Previous experience shows more than a third of these people will find work straight away while nearly half will return for further training.
